Our debt to immigrants
EDITOR: I love my country, but I am saddened by the selfish attitude Americans have toward immigrants. Those of us who were fortunate enough to be born here and enjoy our freedom and standard of living owe a debt of grati-tude to the hard work of our immigrant fore bearers when they came to this country. Why wouldn't we share this opportunity with others who only want the same things as did our parents and grandparents?
Read the welcoming quotation on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to be free…” Generations of Irish, German, Italian and Eastern Europeans left their homelands and ar-rived penniless in America. Much of our country's wealth is owed to their hard work. Let's pay it forward and extend a similar welcome: “Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
