A large shed in rural Ukiah burned to the ground late Wednesday night, also sparking a small grass fire, Ukiah Valley Fire officials said.
Callers reported that the blaze started with an explosion, sometime around 11:22 p.m., on Lake Ridge Drive near Lake Mendocino. The shed-like outbuilding, about 200 square feet, was at the end of a long, rural road. It was up in flames by the time firefighters arrived about 15 minutes later, Engineer Becky Schwenger said.
A house standing about 100 feet away was threatened by the flames. Firefighters from Ukiah Valley Fire and Cal Fire were able to protect the house and had the blaze under control by around midnight, she said. The building was destroyed, she added.
The fire department is still investigating what started the fire.
