Suspect denies role in North Bay bike theft ring

KENTFIELD — The attorney for a woman arrested in connection with an alleged bike theft ring in Marin County says all but perhaps one of the scores of bikes and bike frames deputies seized belong to his client.

Deputy Public Defender Michael Coffino told the Marin Independent Journal (http://bit.ly/1oppv9J) the defendant, 48-year-old Rebecca Hammett, collects and refurbishes bicycles, and sheriff's officials have offered little to no evidence of theft.

Hammett pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to a charge of possessing stolen property.

She was arrested last week after investigators served search warrants at her home and two other locations. They seized more than 130 bikes and frames.

Sheriff's Lt. Jamie Scardina says officials are fielding claims for the bikes.
