EDITOR: I recently discovered a couple of bills making their way through the Legislature that are of particular interest to me. When I decided to contact members of the appropriate committees via each one’s website, I discovered a huge “weasel clause.”
Although they are making decisions that affect every Californian, their websites don’t accept comments from anyone outside of their own districts. You must write to them via snail mail or try to call their offices, in which case you wind up chatting with the lowest person on the totem pole. By the time you can make your opinion known, the bills have been decided.
It is no wonder that our representatives make some ridiculous decisions when the only opinions they hear are from their carefully calculated districts. We need a statewide website that tracks and publishes the opinions of all Californians, not just the representatives’ largest campaign donors.
