Sonoma-Marin Fair has real style

Every county has a fair in the summer, but Petaluma has its own kind of fair, with a charm and style all its own.

The Sonoma-Marin Fair opens Wednesday, June 18, and runs through Sunday, June 22, peaking with the fair's trademark event, the World's Ugliest Dog Contest at 6 p.m. Friday.

Achieving international fame over the past 25 years, this showdown between lovable but appearance-challenged pooches never fails to draw a crowd. Cameron Matheson of ABC-TV's “Good Morning America” will judge the contestants this year.

The fair also presents a series of live concerts featuring name acts, all free with the price of fair admission. This year's line-up includes:

The 1970s-'80s pop star Eddie Money at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Country singer Brett Eldredge at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Creedence Clearwater Revisited (featuring Stu Cook and Doug “Cosmo” Clifford of the original Creedence Clearwater Revival) at 8 p.m. Friday.

Country and rock singer Uncle Kracker at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Fiesta Latina from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, including Grupo El Tiempo, La Sonora Santanera and La Marka de Tierra Caliente.

But that's not all, folks.

The fair also boasts a carnival, livestock shows, wine tasting and children's activities.

And don't forget the pig races — perhaps not as famous as the World's Ugliest Dog Contest, but still fun.

Admission costs $15 for adults; $10 for ages 4-12 or 65 and older online or at the gate. Wednesday is “Everyone's a Kid Day” with admission priced at $10 for all patrons until 5 p.m. at the gate only. Thursday is “Seniors Day,” $5 at the gate.

Hours are 1 to 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, noon to midnight Friday and Saturday and noon to 11 p.m. Sunday at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds, 175 Fairgrounds Drive, Petaluma.
