Three arrests after man shot in face in Windsor

Three men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a Rohnert Park man was shot in the cheek late Thursday night in what the Sonoma County Sheriff's office is calling an unprovoked attack on a random person.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Miguel Angel Reynosa Madrigal, 19, of Windsor; Ricardo Botello, 18, of Healdsburg; and Jose Hugo Martinez-Jimenez, 19, of Santa Rosa on Friday in Windsor. The three are being held in Sonoma County jail on $1 million bail each.

Late Thursday, the Sheriff's Office got several calls about 10 minutes before midnight from people who heard gunshots and a man yelling at Jutta Way near Arata Lane, Sheriff's Sgt. Cecile Focha said in a news release. Not long after, a man called to say he'd been shot.

Deputies arrived and found a vehicle at Arata Lane and Brooks Road South, riddled with bullet holes, Focha said. They found the victim, a 32-year-old man, hiding in the bushes nearby. A bullet was lodged in his jaw, and he was taken to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. He's expected to survive the injury, Focha said.

Deputies searched the area for suspects. At 12:09 a.m., they found three men who had recently abandoned their car and were walking away. One man was armed with a loaded gun, Focha said. Deputies determined they were responsible for shooting the Rohnert Park man as well as connected with two shootings that had taken place earlier that night in Healdsburg, Focha said.

While the men were in custody, detectives from the Sheriff's Office's Violent Crimes Investigations Unit served a search warrant at a Windsor home. Additional charges are pending against the three men, including violently resisting arrest, the Sheriff's Office said.

“The victim has absolutely no connection to any criminal street gangs,” Focha said in a statement released Friday afternoon. “The shooting appears to be a random, unprovoked act of violence against a purely innocent victim.”
