Sonoma County Supervisor Efren Carrillo denied Thursday that he ever peered inside a Santa Rosa woman's apartment but admitted he knocked on her front door and bedroom window just before dawn, clad only in underwear and socks, seeking to have sex with a woman he barely knew.

A contrite-sounding Carrillo took the witness stand at his peeking trial Thursday, blaming a toxic mix of arrogance and alcohol for the bizarre behavior that led to his July 13 arrest.

“At the time, I was egotistical,” said Carrillo, 33. “I was very self-centered. I had a very inflated opinion of myself.”

Jurors will now decide the fate of the 5th District supervisor, who was considered one of the young rising stars in the state Democratic Party before two alcohol-fueled arrests in 11 months changed his public image.

The panel began deliberations Thursday afternoon and returned Friday for more talks.

Carrillo offered his most detailed version yet of the events that led to his early morning foray to his neighbor's home. He insisted he committed no crime, but admitted that drinking influenced his actions in an explanation that appeared at turns, both self-serving and painfully embarrassing.
