Man arrested in Eureka double homicide

  • Vincent Earnest Sanchez (EUREKA POLICE DEPARTMENT)

A Eureka man was in custody Thursday, suspected of killing a relative and another man at a local residence, according to Eureka police.

A double homicide in the coastal town of 27,000 is a rarity, said Police Chief Andrew Mills Thursday.

But Eureka already has experienced one homicide this year — the Jan. 1 slaying of a popular Eureka priest who'd for years also served in Sonoma County.

On Wednesday, just before 4 p.m., a 911 caller alerted police to violence and an injury at a Harris Street home, on the eastern edge of town.

Officers expected to go in and start medical aid. Instead they found one dead man and then a second dead man in a different room.

Each apparently had been shot once in the head. Autopsies, due to be conducted in the next few days, would offer a final determination, the chief said.

Police found their suspect standing outside the home. Vincent Earnest Sanchez, 28, had been staying at the home with one of the residents, a male relative, Mills said.

Sanchez was questioned and later arrested on suspicion of two counts of homicide.

He was booked into the Humboldt County Jail. Chief Mills released news of the slayings Wednesday night and Thursday morning announced the arrest.

The victims' names haven't been released, pending notification of family.

Officers Thursday were continuing to gather evidence at the home.
