Jim and Clella Gray

  • Jim and Clella Gray (Christopher Chung)

Jim and Clella (Schurman) Gray celebrated their 60th anniversary with a dinner party at Negri's Restaurant in Occidental.

The couple met at an Air Force squadron party. They attended the movie "The Robe" on their first date. After dating for a little less than a year, they were married on Nov. 7, 1953, in Topeka, Kansas. They lived in San Francisco before moving to the Occidental area in 1980.

Jim served in the Air force from 1950 to 1953. He was stationed in Topeka and Korea. He was employed as a Lieutenant of the San Francisco Police Department until his retirement. Clella was a stay-at-home mom who did on-and-off office work in the Bay Area while her children were growing up.

Jim keeps busy taking care of their 10 acres, including a few chickens and five head of cattle. Clella enjoys making quilts and giving them as gifts to family and friends.

Family members include: daughter, Annette Gray, and her husband, Charles Bartholomew, of Sherwood, Ore.; and son, Michael Gray, and his wife, Debbie, of Petaluma. They have five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Their advice for a long and happy marriage is to learn to forgive and forget.
