This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):

Husch, 2012 Anderson Valley Gewurztraminer, 13.9 percent alcohol, $14. A floral gewürztraminer with a range of flavors. Notes of grapefruit, nectarine and honeysuckle. Lovely.

Loring Wine Company, 2012 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, 14.7 percent, $32. A lush pinot dripping with fruit. Has depth. Lingering finish. A knockout.

Dry Creek Vineyard, 2011 Dry Creek Valley Old Vine Zinfandel, 14.5 percent, $30. A sexy zin with bright cherry and black raspberry flavors, with notes of herb and white pepper. Racing acidity. Gorgeous.

Palmeri, 2011 Sonoma County Red Wine, 14.8 percent, $54. Really good. Complex with aromas and flavors of black raspberry, black cherry, cedar and dark chocolate. Firm tannins. Deep and brooding? Absolutely.

Rutherford Ranch, 2010 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, 15 percent, $65. A cab with great bones (structure). Concentrated flavors of black cherry, herbs and black pepper. Bright acid. Round texture. A standout.
