El Molino High's declining enrollment concerning district

Declining enrollment at El Molino High School in Forestville will be the focus of a special West Sonoma High School District board meeting Wednesday.

El Molino currently has 604 students, down from 1,099 in the 2003-04 school year, according to district data. In that period, the district’s other comprehensive high school, Analy in Sebastopol, has had its enrollment decrease just slightly, from 1,394 to 1,369 students. Analy has gained students every year since 2009-10.

El Molino, a four-time California Distinguished School, had a peak enrollment of 1,200 students in 1998-99.

The district is not considering consolidating high schools but the board of trustees has called the enrollment disparity one of the most pressing issues facing the district.

The format of the meeting will focus on hearing from members of the community about their visions for the future of El Molino and ideas on a course of action, according to district Superintendent Keller McDonald.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the El Molino High School library, 7050 Covey Road, Forestville.
