Sunday's Letters to the Editor

Smoke and fire

EDITOR: This is the driest year in history. Nobody likes to dwell on it, and the problems are not insurmountable, but due diligence is needed.

Fire dangers are high. It sounds absurd to some when it's freezing out, but the humidity is at an all-time winter low. I used to smoke. Those of you who still smoke, and are sometimes forced to smoke outside by others, need to be very careful. Maybe the non-smoker of the house should be a little more tolerant, as a forest fire could devastate western Sonoma County. Those of you who rent your homes, let your rental company/tenants know that there is an extreme fire hazard. It might be a good idea to allow smoking in an attached garage.

While we talk a good line when it comes to tolerance, there is little or no tolerance when it comes to cigarettes. Remember, it was that way with pot and it was that way with gay marriage. Try to be tolerant of others for the sake of Mother Nature.

Deputy pilloried

EDITOR: The Justice for Andy Lopez Coalition and its supporters spout nothing but hate toward a man they don't know anything about. Deputy Erick Gelhaus is accused of being a racist, a murderer and a danger to society. He has served Sonoma County, protecting citizens, for 24 years, doing a job the majority of people wouldn't do.

It is his responsibility to protect citizens. He has also bravely served his country. People start crawling out of the woodwork claiming negative interactions with Gelhaus. Interestingly, these same people were violating the law in some way. Where are the interviews with the thousands of citizens who have had positive interactions with Gelhaus?

Andy Lopez did not drop the weapon when ordered to do so and turned toward the deputies, pointing that weapon. As a parent, I say shame on Andy Lopez's parents. No responsible parent would allow a child to carry a replica weapon anywhere. The responsibility for this tragedy falls directly on their shoulders. It was Gelhaus' responsibility and duty to neutralize the situation.
