Close-to-home holiday fun

It's that time of year. The tree is lit up, a bite is in the air and the kids are home from school looking for something to do — over and over again.

“We usually hear two things from parents,” said Jessica Ruskin, education director at Santa Rosa's Schulz Museum. “Parents are often looking for something creative they can do together with their kids. And then on other occasions, parents are looking to drop them off and give them something to do other than sitting at home watching television.”

And then there are the grown-up kids who arrive for the workshops with no little ones in tow.

City of Lights holiday driving tour

“Every year, we get adults calling and asking if they can do the Snoopy workshop even though they don't have any children and we say, 'Of course, come on down.'”

Before Santa arrives, here's a short, wintry roundup of kiddie (and adult) holiday delights:

Charles Schulz Museum

The tribute center to “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz always goes all out for the holidays. At 10 a.m. Saturday, the beloved Decorate Your Own Snoopy workshop allows everyone artistic license to personalize their favorite beagle.

And then at 1 p.m. Saturday, the Holiday Gift-Making workshop leads kids in the making of fleece hats and pillows, s'mores in a jar and snowball soap.

Grades 1-6. $25 members/$32 non-members. Schulz Museum Education Annex, 1835 Steele Lane, Santa Rosa. Register at schulzmuseum.org or call 284-1263.

Santa Fly-In at Pacific Coast Air Museum

There's no admission fee when Santa does his annual Fly-In from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Look for St. Nick to fall out of the sky in a REACH helicopter around 10:30 a.m. Kids can climb in Santa's lap for photos and climb aboard other open aircraft at the museum.

One Air Museum Way, Santa Rosa. pacificcoastairmuseum.org. 575-7900.

Petaluma City of Lights Driving Tour

Pack the kids up in the mini-van, load up on hot cocoa and head out for an after-dark cruise of Petaluma, because no other city in Sonoma County organizes a Christmas lights tour quite like the old Egg Basket.
