Bitter cold to ease through week

Another freezing warning is in effect for Tuesday morning across the North Coast, with morning temperatures that weren't expected to break records albeit remain bone-cold low.

The freezing warning ends at 9 a.m. Tuesday with lows forecast in the teens and 20s. Daytime highs were expected to inch up through the 50s this week in a slow but steady warming pattern, National Weather Service forecasters said.

Temperatures fell into the teens early Monday throughout the region, dipping to 19 degrees at the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport.

Cold Weather Hits Sonoma County

A de-icing machine malfunctioned early Monday, stranding a plane full of passengers bound for Los Angeles on the first flight of the day for about three and a half hours, said Airport Manager Jon Stout.

“That is a big inconvenience,” he said. “When you get an equipment malfunction, it can cause a ripple.”

A second morning flight — this one to Seattle — was also delayed because the same plane that flies to Los Angeles is typically used for the Seattle journey, Stout said. Alaska Airlines was able to bring in a backup plane to take Seattle-bound passengers to their destination about an hour behind schedule, he said.

Official lows early Monday hit 21 degrees in Sonoma, 20 degrees in Petaluma and 17 in Cazadero, according to AccuWeather. In Mendocino County, Ukiah's low was 18 degrees and to the east in Lakeport, Lake County the mercury dipped to 19 degrees.

The relative warm spots early Monday were in the areas of Windsor and Bodega Bay, where the lows were 27 and 29 degrees. “If you want to call that warm...” said Bob Benjamin, meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

Temperatures were 15-20 degrees below normal but did not break records Monday.

“Back in 1972 we had some really really cold temperatures,” he said. Santa Rosa that Dec. 9, 1972 morning dipped to 16 degrees.
