GUERNEVILLE: Create floral displays for the holidays

Why sink a lot of money into fake floral arrangements when you can make your own?

Ellyn Pelikan will show you how to make low-cost or no-cost wreaths, swags and table décor to grace your holiday home using materials from your own garden.

SONOMA: Tips from a succulents specialist

Succulents are versatile additions to any part of the garden, from stone walls and between patio pavers to rock gardens and even rooftops.

Aaron Ryan, a succulent propagation specialist who works for Cottage Gardens of Petaluma, will talk about these trendy plants during the Nov. 7 meeting of the Valley of the Moon Garden Club.

Ryan will share tips for using succulents in garden beds and artful containers, mixing them with plants like salvias to add texture, shape and design. He also will talk about how to care for and grow them.

His presentation will include a hands-on demonstration for planting as well as ways to use succulents for holiday tables and gifts.

The free talk, open to nonmembers, will be at 7 p.m. Thursday in Room 110 of the Sonoma Community Center, 276 E. Napa St., Sonoma. Refreshments are included. Info: 935-5939.

SANTA ROSA: Workshop on sudden oak death

Get up to speed on sudden oak death during a workshop put on Saturday by the Sonoma County Master Gardeners.

The two-hour field workshop is led by Dr. Matteo Garbelotto of UC Berkeley, who has conducted extensive research on the subject. He will demonstrate how to manage and prevent the disease that has been killing vast stands of California trees, including tips on selecting the best trees for treatment.

The workshop will be at 10 a.m. at the UC Cooperative Extension Office, 133 Aviation Blvd., Santa Rosa. Info: ucanr.edu/sonomasod.
