Extra Letters: Readers react to government shutdown

EDITOR: I read the article in Wednesday paper about how adult Americans are below average when it comes to problem solving skills. That seems to explain what's going on in Washington these days.

Stand up to GOP

EDITOR: On Sunday, columnist Pete Golis essentially blamed both sides for the impasse in Washington and urged both sides to come together and work things out (“Common sense, please”). Maybe they could even come up with a Grand Bargain! The last time they tried, the best they could come up with was a committee that finally gave us the sequester. It was supposed to be so draconian that reasonable people would reject it and come up with a budget. That was the fatal flaw right there, so we wound up with the sequester.

President Barack Obama must stand up to the Republican Party and resist the tea party's effort to close down the government or else, because he has already given away too much to them.

House Speaker John Boehner must allow the Senate's continuing resolution to come to a vote on the House floor. If there are any sensible Republicans in Congress, I'm sure they will vote to keep the government open because, dollarwise, that budget is quite close to what the Republicans are demanding. If not, Obama cannot blink. The ball is in the Republicans' court. Leave it there. Let them dig themselves out of their own hole.
