Home and garden news: Free herb workshop in Glen Ellen

Fresh herbs at the market are excruciatingly expensive. But it's not hard to punch up the flavor of your everyday meals with herbs you grow yourself.

Master Gardener Janet Barocco will share tips on growing good herbs during a free workshop Saturday at Quarryhill Botanical Garden in Glen Ellen.

Barocco will discuss the basics for cultivating, using and preserving fresh herbs. Workshop-goers should bring a wide-mouth jar a third full of wine, cider or rice vinegar and a handful of favorite herbs. Organizers expect to have some extras for those who don't have them.

Barocco is a graduate of the California School of Herbal Studies and the horticulture program at Santa Rosa Junior College. She turned her own suburban lot into an edible landscape and orchard.

Drop-ins are welcome. The class will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon. For information, call 996-3166 or visit quarryhillbg.org.
