Letter of the Day: Americans suffering

  • (JOEL PETT / Lexington Herald-Leader)

Americans suffering

EDITOR: When the cuts to SNAP, the federal food stamp program, go into effect, what will happen to the millions of U.S. citizens who have been forced to apply for food stamps to feed their families after losing their jobs in this Great Recession?

Republicans in Congress almost look with disdain at those who need this help, conveniently forgetting it was Congress that caused this recession. It did not “just happen.”

When Congress passed the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999, which deregulated the banking and financial services industries, this single piece of legislation caused the collapse of the U.S. real estate market, the collapse of the U.S. economy and then the global financial collapse. The fact that millions of Americans have lost their jobs and have been unable to find work can be blamed on members of Congress who enacted this legislation.

No member of Congress has suffered adverse consequences as a result of this irresponsible decision. No member has lost their job or lost their home in foreclosure; only ordinary Americans are suffering. And now their suffering will increase with more irresponsible decisions being made by Congress.

We'll remember this when they're campaigning for re-election.
