Alice Walker speaks at Healdsburg’s Raven
Disney on Ice, Steely Dan fill out weekly etnertainment roundup

Human rights activist and author Alice Walker appears in conversation at The Raven Theater in Healdsburg Oct. 25, part of an afternoon of celebration that begins with a tea party and silent auction and ends with dancing in the aisles.

Walker, winner of the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, appears at 3 p.m., reading poems from her forthcoming book, “Hard Times Require Furious Dancing,” and answering questions. Her talk follows tea and chocolate and an art auction at 1:30 p.m.

The program also includes a talk from Kwamboka Okari, founder of a children’s foundation that supports AIDS orphans in Kenya.

See seven Disney princesses on ice

For the fans of the magical heroines of classic Walt Disney films, there are some enchanted evenings coming up soon.

“Disney on Ice Presents Princess Classics” runs Oct. 14-18 at Oracle Arena in Oakland and Oct. 21-25 at HP Pavilion in San Jose.

This new touring show features, not just one or two, but seven favorite Disney princesses: Cinderella, Jasmine, Ariel, Sleeping Beauty, Belle, Mulan and Snow White.

The production transforms the ice rink into a jeweled, three-story, revolving castle where the heroines’ stories unfold.

Steely Dan reprises albums at SF shows

Jazz-rockers Steely Dan are reeling in the years, but where are they stowin’ away the time? As part of its “Rent Party ’09 Tour,” the irreverent band will reprise a few of its watermark albums from front to back at 8 p.m. Oct. 23 and 24 at the Masonic Center in San Francisco. Still led by vocalist and keyboardist Donald Fagen and guitarist Walter Becker, Steely Dan will play its 1977 album, “Aja,” on Oct. 23, followed by the hits of its 1976 album, “Royal Scam,” on Oct. 24. The set list for a third concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 will be determined by ticket-holders, who can vote online for their favorites.
