Angwin crash survivor stable, now faces arrest

An Angwin man hurt in a weekend crash that killed four others remained hospitalized Monday and facing possible arrest for suspicion of drunken driving, the CHP said.

Officers already arrested a third driver in the crash for allegedly drinking and driving.

There were four young Pacific Union College students in the car that caused the accident. They all died in the crash.

Sandalio Martinez, 28, was driving on Deer Park Road near St. Helena late Saturday night when another car slid into his lane and hit him.

The CHP Monday said there was evidence that pointed to the possibility Martinez had been drinking when his car was hit. If officers determine he was drunk, he wouldn’t be arrested until after he is released from Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Monday Martinez was listed in stable condition. He sustained critical injuries in the crash, the CHP said.

Martinez’ name was reversed in earlier news reports.

The crash occurred at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday.

The four young men had driven down the winding rural road from the college. They were headed for a market for some late-night snacks after playing basketball, the CHP said.

Driver, Boaz Pak, 20, was driving excessively fast and lost control on a turn just before reaching the valley floor, the CHP said.

The other students who died were Chong Shin, 20, Simon Son, 19, and Luke Nishikawa, 22.

The CHP said there were no indications found that Pak had been drinking.

Driver Carlos Rio Ortiz, 20, of Angwin, came upon the crashed vehicles and smashed into them. He was reportedly not seriously injured and was arrested on suspicion of drinking under the influence.
