Last Modified: Sunday, September 7, 2008 at 6:26 a.m.
A woman, her brother and her young daughter were recovering Saturday from injuries suffered when a minivan struck them as they crossed Santa Rosa Avenue in a crosswalk, police said.
The woman, Josefa Lopez, 18, her 8-year-old brother and her 2-year-old daughter were crossing the street from east to west near Bellevue Avenue when a vehicle southbound on Santa Rosa Avenue hit them about 7:55 p.m Friday.
They were hospitalized in Santa Rosa, but the children were later taken by air to a Bay Area children's hospital, police said.
Further details about the extent of their injuries were not available.
The minivan's driver was identified as Karin Jones, 49, of Petaluma, Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Doug Schlief said in a press release. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor.
Lopez and the children were in a marked crosswalk when they were hit, Schlief said.

Press Demo....any news on the kids' conditions? They're still children, no matter who they are....it's sad to see something bad happen to them. Thanks for the non-update...again.

FACT: it's a dangerous street for anyone to cross. People drive too fast and it's so busy it's hard to notice anything other than trying to drive around all the traffic... more crosswalk warnings (the lighted kind)

Was it one of those stupid crosswalks not associated with a regular traffic signal?
Those crosswalks are very dangerous and a very bad idea. Drivers don't expect to see pedestrians walking across Santa Rosa Ave. in the middle of the road with only an oddly placed flashing light that might warn a driver that was looking around instead of the road, since they are not associated with normal traffic signals. I been behind many a car screeching to a halt, or missing entirely the fact people were crossing in the strangley located crosswalks. Whether or not this accident was related to one of those crosswalks, I hope the city ditches them as they are unsafe.

It never fails to amaze me at the lack of sympathy when its a latino victim and the outcry of "if it was a white victim, they do more."
Are we ever going to be able to put aside race and just read the news as things happening to people of our community as opposed to the person was white, black, latino, asian and therefore not as good as another?
The driver of the car made a HUGE mistake, whatever the circumstances and the victims, especially the children, deserve our sympathy, not scorn.
