Beer of the Week: Moonlight IPA

No wine glass this week. Instead, wine writer Peg Melnik pulled out a pint glass for a blind tasting of 11 India pale ales, or IPAs The results: complexity that rivaled a cellared cabernet. Hops, used to spice the beer, had a range of flavors, from floral to herbal to citrusy.

Moonlight Brewing

Bombay by Boat IPA

***** The most complex, refreshing and balanced. Hoppy throughout. Notes of roasted herbs. Has depth, a slow melding of flavors. Good length.

Other tasty contenders

Anderson Valley Brewing IPA, **** ½

Floral, crisp aromas. Crisp, refreshing and hoppy. Herbal, yeasty and spicy. Not too rich.

Lagunitas IPA ****

Aromatic. Big, resiny, hoppy flavors with a strong backbone to balance it. Hoppy finish.

Dempsey's Petaluma Strong Ale ****

Rich and creamy. Yeasty and hoppy. Good length.
