Meeting tonight: Should Humboldt Street become bike boulevard?
Last Modified: Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at 5:59 p.m.
Santa Rosa transportation officials will host a public meeting Wednesday to unveil plans for a bicycle boulevard along most of Humboldt Street.
The meeting, which runs from 6 to 8 p.m., will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall, 545 Pacific Avenue off Mendocino Avenue.
The event will allow planners to describe design options that would allow motorists and cyclists to share the road safely and conveniently.
Public input also will be taken during part of the meeting.
The bicycle boulevard would run from Lewis Road to Fifth Street, as proposed in the city’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan, officials said.

Are bike lanes not enough? Now a whole damn city street? WTF Santa Rosa? Stop the madness, seriously.
Can this city please focus on generating sustainable interest from outside businesses that will generate real professional jobs instead of this joke of a local economy built on tourism and banker/mortgage slim bag broker industry.
Quit trying to keep Santa Rosa small. The leaders of Santa Rosa are the equivalent of the fat girl who thinks she can fit into her sexy sisters size 4 dress.
You're NOT LITTLE SANTA ROSA! You're a big girl and you need big person things. Grown up careers, grown up streets, grown up highways,
grown up infastructure. Not another Square AKA traffic nightmare and certainly not a whole damn street reduced to a giant bike lane. Get with the program and stop blowing tax payer money on special interest that benefit no one but your contributors.

First this county caters to illegal aliens and now we have to cater to bike riders that most of the time don't follow traffic laws. Bike riders listen up SHARE THE DAMN ROAD with motorist and you won't get hit.

All cars park at city limits. Bikes only in town. Yeah!

All the people that responded think people on bikes shouldn't be on "their" streets. That the city is cow-towing to a minority.
Their responses show they are people who have little regard to others.
A blantantly selfish attitude.

Annabbruzzese,
I'd like to think I am not a selfish person. I personally have no problem with those who choose to cycle instead of drive. I myself enjoy riding during my leisure. So to you and all the other riders posting, I want to make sure you recognize my respect for you (assuming you're a rider).
That said, I do take issue with cyclist who disregard 1. Basic traffic rules and 2. Obnoxiously slow down traffic in an attempt to be apart of the road.
I'd much appreciate bikers utilizing the far right lanes and where available, the bike lanes. When it comes to left handed turns, please turn wide so vehicle traffic can pass you instead of holding us up while you begin to pedal. Not all, but many Santa Rosa cyclist are obnoxious traffic pigs. I certainly don't wish harm upon them but I can understand why so many are injured in traffic accidents - because they are obnoxious and disregard vehicle traffic.
My other issue is with the city of Santa Rosa and Sonoma County in general. There are substanially more pressing issues to be addressed. This city and county has regressive leadership. It is apparent in nearly every facet of life here. And to be honest, it's frustrating.
I hope you understand my position and don't take offense to the frustrating predicament the city puts its citizens in. And I hope that if you're a cyclist, you respect vehicle traffic and use the should lane/bike lane when riding.

Share the road???
How about share the law...starting obeying traffic laws...cops need to start ticketing riders for running red lights, passing on the right, etc...
So, please do not ask me to share the rode, if you can't follow the law.

Driving cars is killing the planet! Stop with your lame complaints about cyclists at least they don't kill people when they run red lights. My suggestion is the more drives need to get off your fat rear ends and ride a bike for trips less than 5 miles. You have the perfect weather here for it year round so there is no excuse except laziness!
August 7, 2008 10:35:00 am
Vinrouge - you couldn't be more wrong.
They get killed when the run the red light then all their cycling buddies AUTOMATICALLY blame the driver of the car.
I will agree with you about the <5 miles - personally I'd rather walk, so maybe <2 miles...and bring back local neighborhood markets.

Why do bike riders think the have the solution for the rest of the populace? It seems that the bike riders have the time to rally against the "bad old car" because they either don't have a job or are on welfare! You are not going to find the working stiff riding his bike to work with his 500lb toolbox on the back. The city listens to every crackpot and low life already who don't contribute anything to the city coffers or to society except hot air and gas! You have bike lanes already maybe if you followed the law and didn't think you were God's gift to humanity, you would get listened to better. Bike lanes, sure, pay for them with taxes that the car owners pay? NO WAY!
