Memorial opens long-awaited heart institute

SANTA ROSA – Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital officials celebrated the culmination of more than three years and $57 million in work last week, dedicating the Norma & Evert Person Heart & Vascular Institute Wednesday.

The three-story, 27,000-square-foot building was opened to the public and dedicated to donors, who collectively gave about $16.3 million. Former Press Democrat Publisher and owners Norma and Evert Person donated the largest sum to the project, about $5 million, and are pictured on the “wall of fame” with other plaques recognizing contributors.

“The reason why it is so wonderful to have the community donate money to this is so they can really feel like this is their hospital,” said Al Maggini, who co-chaired the fundraising drive with Sharon Wright.

With all heart treatment equipment and staff in one place, Memorial cardiologist Dr. John Reed said doctors will be able to reduce crucial time during a heart attack. The site includes two cardiac surgical suites with state-of-the-art equipment, two catheterization labs, 10 observation beds, nine post-operative beds, an electrophysiology lab, a staff room, patient lounge and garden.

The project was originally marked at about $23 million but increased dramatically as construction costs increased from 2005. Work will continue though the end of July, and patients should begin treatment in the institute sometime during the first week of August.

“It’s a very exciting day,” said George Perez, president and chief executive officer of St. Joseph Health System-Sonoma County before a public tour of the facility.

“It’s hard to believe it’s finally here.”
