When a modern-day musical theater fan and record collector settles down to listen to the original cast album of his favorite show from 1928, the show magically crackles to life right before his eyes.
That's the premise of the Broadway hit "The Drowsy Chaperone," winner of five Tony Awards in 2006.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. today for the Best of Broadway presentation of the show's national touring company, playing July 22-Aug. 17 at the Orpheum Theatre, 1192 Market St., San Francisco.
In this play-within-a-play, a pampered Broadway starlet wants to quit show business, while her producer plots to keep her onstage. $30-$99. (415) 512-7770, www.shnfs.com, www.ticketmaster.com.
Tin Man on Mount Tam
Rohnert Park actor David Yen has won over audiences at Santa Rosa's 6th Street Playhouse and lent his own quirky sense of humor to the holiday season with his annual "Do-It-Yourself Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol.' "
But today, his career reaches a pinnacle, of sorts, when he opens as the Tin Man in the Mountain Play production of "The Wizard of Oz" in the amphitheater atop Marin County's Mount Tamalpais.
The show continues with performances at 1 p.m. every Sunday through July 18, with one Saturday show at 1 p.m. June 7. $26-$37; children age 3 or younger free. (415) 383-1100, www.mountainplay.org.
