Press Democrat wine columnist Peg Melnik scopes out wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week's picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):

Handley, 2007 Anderson Valley Gewurztraminer ($18) -- A refreshing gewurztraminer, crisp with lively flavors. Notes of melon, apricot, pineapple and lime. Spicy finish.

Pellegrini, 2005 Cloverdale Ranch, Alexander Valley Merlot ($23) -- A merlot that's very approachable, soft and fleshy. Aromas and flavors of cherry, anise and white pepper. Balanced.

Gallo Family Vineyards, 2005 Laguna Vineyard Russian River Valley Chardonnay ($24) -- A rich, toasty chardonnay. Notes of apple, melon, creme brulée and spice. Soft texture.

Marimar Estate, 2005 Doria Margarita Vineyard, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($45) -- A bright, tangy pinot noir. Aromas and flavors of cherry, black cherry, rhubarb, herbs and spice. Fleshy texture. Balanced.

Pina, 2005 Buckeye Vineyard, Howell Mountain, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($78) -- A seamless cabernet with integrated tannins. Aromas and flavors of blackberry, black cherry, herbs and white pepper. Hint of black raspberry. Long finish.
