As more cities around California hit the $4-a-gallon price for gasoline, Santa Rosa is inching closer to that mark.

On Thursday, the average for regular was a record $3.904, up a fraction of a cent from Wednesday, according to AAA.

California continued to lead the nation in highest price at a record $3.92. Wyoming had the cheapest on average at $3.43.

Among the Santa Rosa area’s commonly low-priced gas stations, regular was selling Thursday morning for $3.819 at all of them -- the Arco stations and Costco in Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park.

While gas prices march up, AAA reported diesel in Santa Rosa actually dropped Thursday: An average of $4.459, down a penny.

For the state's metropolitan areas, AAA reported San Francisco, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo have reached or surpassed $4 a gallon for gas.
