The newly licensed teen driver in a fatal crash on a Rohnert Park street may have been going twice the 35 mph speed limit, police said Wednesday.
"Witnesses at the scene reported he was traveling at atrocious speeds," Rohnert Park police Sgt. Art Sweeney said.
Sweeney said an accident review team is looking into the crash and has a lot of meticulous work to do. But he said it's possible the car was moving at 70 mph or more.
Tyler Canales, 17, was driving two friends to school on March 20. He lost control on Camino Collegio, hit a center divider and flipped the car.
Kevin Carr-Grillo, 16, died in the crash. Chris Reynolds, 17, was reported to be in an induced coma earlier this week. Sweeney said he hadn't heard whether the boy's status had changed.
The investigation team is piecing together the mechanics of the crash, Sweeney said.
That information will help point officers toward any recommendation to the district attorney regarding possible criminal charges.
Canales had had his license for about six weeks. He apparently violated a law that restricts new teen drivers from having other juveniles in the car unless an adult of 25 years or older is present.
