A Petaluma woman remained hospitalized Thursday after she was caught up in a 10-car collision that shut the Golden Gate Bridge on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
Lynne Throop, 67, was one of three Sonoma County residents involved in the 2:40 p.m. chain-reaction crash that began when a Petaluma man in a northbound pickup moved into the path of another vehicle while trying to change lanes, the CHP said.
Authorities said the accident began when pickup driver James Myers, 34, moved directly into the path of a northbound Volvo whose driver swerved to avoid a collision and lost control.
The Volvo first struck Myers’ pickup, causing both vehicles to careen into the southbound lanes, setting off a series of collision that left three people, including Throop, with major injuries, the CHP said.
She was listed in stable condition Thursday morning at San Francisco General Hospital.
Eleven people in all were involved in the string of crashes, including Julia Stege, 48, of Sebastopol, who was not injured, the CHP said.
Three others suffered minor injuries, and one had moderate injuries, the CHP said.
It appeared Myers was uninjured but was taken to San Francisco General Hospital for evaluation and then released, the CHP said.
The incident near the bridge’s north tower shut the bridge in both directions for nearly an hour but did not have the bridge completely reopened until after 4 p.m.
