A man charged with the rape and attempted murder of a woman loading groceries into her car pleaded not guilty Monday in Sonoma County court.

Aristotle Quadra, 30, is charged with crimes that could mean a life prison term if convicted.

Investigators say he forced the woman to comply with his demands by threatening her 2-year-old boy, who was in her car in the parking lot of a Bennett Valley grocery store.

The woman reported that a man holding an ice pick forced her to drive them to another location, where he bound and raped her and then stabbed her 10, according to police and court records.

She sought help at a nearby health care facility and was treated at a hospital for her injuries. The boy wasn't physically harmed.

After a drawing of the rapist was published, tips poured in, including at least one that identified Quadra as a possible suspect.

Police said Quadra stabbed himself with a homemade spear as officers were entering his home to serve a search warrant.

Quadra on Monday was scheduled to appear in court in early April, then again for a preliminary hearing on April 15.
