The unidentified man was traveling west in his car with his brother shortly before 1:30 p.m. when he was struck in the back, Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Lisa Banayat said.

The driver pulled over near Rockwell Lane, and the brother called 911, police said. The driver was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital.

His condition wasn’t immediately known and police were just starting to look for the assailant.

A gang task force member at the scene just after 2 p.m. said they were investigating the possibility of gang involvement, after the injured man’s brother was uncooperative with police, Lt Jerry Briggs said.

Neither brother has been identified by police and there is no suspect nor any witnesses, Briggs said.

“There is no suspect information, however we are continuing with gang unit to see if there might be gang involvement,” Banayat said.

Police described the shooting as a drive-by but didn’t say if they believe the assailant was in another vehicle or on foot.

Police surrounded the brothers’ red Ford Explorer, parked at the corner of West Ninth and Rockwell Place, only a few yards from Lincoln Elementary School.

The school was not locked-down, Briggs said, and students were not in danger during the shooting.
