Suspected would-be kidnapper charged
Last Modified: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 2:29 p.m.
A Sonoma man suspected of trying to kidnap a 3-year-old girl from her babysitter last week was charged Wednesday with six felony counts, including alleged attempted kidnapping, child endangerment and two counts of residential burglary, the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office said.
Normando Zamora Ramirez, 24, also was charged with the suspected false imprisonment of the child’s babysitter, and with battery on a custodial officer during booking at the Sonoma County Jail, authorities said.
Ramirez is being held at the jail with bail of $300,000.
He faces a maximum 10-year, 10-month prison term if convicted in the case, prosecutors said.
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department said Ramirez went to the baby sitter’s Boyes Hot Springs home just before noon Friday and opened a screen door to grab the child, ripping the girl’s sweater.
When the baby sitter intervened, the suspect allegedly pushed the child out the door and, grabbing the sitter by the hair, dragged her outdoors, authorities said.
Her screams alerted a neighbor who rushed to help and detained the suspect until deputies arrived, authorities said.
Ramirez was charged Wednesday in Sonoma County Superior Court but has not yet entered a plea, the District Attorney’s Office said.
He is scheduled to return to court Feb. 28, authorities said.
