67° M/SUNNY, Spraying to fight apple moth planned

SAN FRANCISCO -- California agricultural authorities announced Wednesday plans to spray a pesticide over cities in the Bay Area and Central Coast to stop a crop-eating moth.
The aerial spraying, intended to disrupt the pest's mating cycle, would start this summer. Officials say the light brown apple moth threatens millions of dollars in farm products.
Spraying over Monterey and Santa Cruz counties last fall stoked fierce opposition among residents worried the chemicals could cause health problems. The state Department of Food and Agriculture received hundreds of reports from people who said they felt sick after the spraying, agency officials said last month.
The sprayings over San Francisco are expected to begin Aug. 1. Other infested areas to be sprayed as early as June include Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, and Daly City, Colma, Oakland, Piedmont, Emeryville, Albany, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Tiburon and Belvedere.
