Sutter reveals plan for electronic files

Sutter Health unveiled plans Monday to launch a electronic filing system at its Santa Rosa facility to store patients' medical records.
The statewide system, which cost $25 million to $30 million to develop, is designed to reduce errors and improve patient care, said Steve Wolf, a Santa Rosa doctor who worked on the Sutter project.
Beginning in March, patients will see computer terminals in their doctors' offices. In June those systems are expected to be up and running, allowing doctors to electronically modify a patient's chart, view details of a patient's visit to other doctors and gather health research data and pharmaceutical information for diagnosis and treatment.
"This is going to improve the convenience and efficiency of patient care from all perspectives," Wolf said. "We'll be able to better integrate in-patient and out-patient care, to lower medical errors and make records more legible."
