Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday named a member of his 2006 re-election team as his new deputy chief of staff and communications director.

Matt David, 28, replaces Adam Mendelsohn, 33, who is leaving to work on the governor's political endeavors and spend more time with family.

David worked briefly for John McCain's presidential bid until the Arizona senator ran low on money and had to cut back his staff.

David will be paid Mendelsohn's outgoing salary of $147,900 a year.
