A mentally ill man who was shot by a Santa Rosa police officer, apparently after going off his medications and turning violent, has died as a result of injuries suffered in the Wednesday afternoon shooting, a police official said Thursday.

The unidentified 24-year-old man took a turn for the worst late Wednesday night, though earlier indications from medical personnel suggested he would survive, Santa Rosa Police Capt. Tom Schwedhelm said.

The man was shot as he advanced with a knife toward two police officers who responded to an emergency call from the A Street home, police said Wednesday.

A Taser stun gun also was used but proved ineffective, police said.

The man’s name has not been made public.

Police also have refused to identify the police officers involved.

Under a countywide protocol for officer-involved shootings, the incident has been turned over to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department because it resulted in a fatality, Shwedhelm said.

Sheriff’s officials were not available early Thursday to comment on the case.
