A record $280,000 was raised Saturday night at the Carousel Fund’s 20th annual casino night at the veterans building — surpassing by $100,000 the previous high for the event.
Funds raised at the dinner-dance are used to help families of children in Petaluma suffering from life-threatening illnesses.
“It was a huge success,” said Arnie Cohen, founder and president of the organization. “What’s important is that what’s raised here stays in Petaluma.”
An estimated 1,400 people attended the event. Those who stayed until the end heard singer Eddie Money and his band perform for nearly 90 minutes.
One of the live auction prizes, a chance to share the stage with the singer for his first song, went to a woman who bid $1,800. The big-ticket item was a BMW motorcycle that went for $12,000.
Former San Francisco Giants baseball players Vida Blue, Dave Kingman and Bill Laskey played in a celebrity poker tournament and mingled with guests.
Mayor Pamela Torliatt presented Cohen with a city proclamation declaring the first Saturday in October every year as Carousel Fund Day.
